Caring for Ageing Tasmanians since 1896

The District Nurses is one of Tasmania’s longest-standing community organisations, providing trusted in-home healthcare and community nursing for more than 125 years.

Independent and not affiliated with any residential aged care provider or religious organisation, we’ve always focused on delivering care where it matters most, at home and in the community.

Founded as the Hobart District Nursing Service in 1896, our story began when the Governor of Tasmania’s wife called a public meeting to discuss the need for a district nurse in Hobart. The Hobart District Nurses Association was established that day, at a time when public health was gaining attention, women were stepping into public leadership, and nursing was becoming recognised as a respected profession.

Evolving with Tasmania, always committed to care

Tasmania’s health system has changed significantly over time, and so have we. While our structure and services have evolved to meet the needs of today, our purpose remains the same.

Guided by our core values of Commitment, Equality, Excellence, Trust, Versatility and Transparency, we support ageing Tasmanians to live well in their homes and communities.

Our experienced team works in partnership with clients, families and fellow health professionals. We’re dedicated to the principles of primary healthcare and continually improving our services through evidence-based practice.
